Covenant University (CU) has been named Nigeria’s top university in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, reaffirming its position as a leading private institution. The university has excelled in various key areas, including teaching, research, and industry collaboration, contributing to its high ranking locally and internationally.
The THE Rankings are an annual evaluation of universities worldwide, and the 2024 edition assessed 1,907 institutions from 108 countries and regions. The rankings are based on 18 performance indicators, covering aspects such as teaching quality, research environment, research impact, industry collaboration, and international outlook.
For the 2024 rankings, over 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications were analyzed, and responses from 68,402 academics worldwide were collected. The data used to evaluate these universities was extensive, with THE gathering 411,789 data points from more than 2,673 universities.
Globally, the University of Oxford in the UK maintained its number one position for the ninth consecutive year, making it the longest-running top university in THE’s history. Oxford surpassed Harvard University, which had previously held the top spot for eight consecutive years.
Despite being ranked in the global 800-1000 range, Covenant University stands as Nigeria’s best university, ahead of the University of Ibadan (UI), which also falls within the same range. This recognition is a testament to Covenant University’s commitment to excellence in education, research, and industry partnerships.
