Security Concerns Mount as Schools Prepare to Resume Third Term Amidst Ongoing Safety Threats

As primary and secondary schools gear up to commence their third-term academic session on Monday, apprehension grips some parents and guardians due to the prevailing security situation in the country.

Recent closures of schools, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and neighboring Kaduna State, underscore the pervasive fear stemming from security threats. These closures were prompted by heightened security risks, including the disturbing trend of schoolchildren abductions, predominantly in the northern regions.

The nation witnessed a wave of kidnappings, with approximately 800 individuals, including schoolchildren, falling victim to audacious terrorist acts from March 6 to March 11 alone. Reports prior to the Easter break suggested looming attacks on government-owned schools, notably in Bwari, Bwari Area Council.

Although schools managed to conclude their terminal examinations before the holidays, concerns persist as classes resume on April 22.

Many schools within the FCT have bolstered security measures in and around their premises, yet parental anxiety remains palpable. Parents, acknowledging the necessity of governmental intervention in ensuring security, also advocate for divine protection and proactive measures.

As the community braces for the school resumption, some areas like Kuriga community in Kaduna’s Chikun Local Government Area express reluctance, citing ongoing security concerns. However, authorities reassure the public of safety, with police spokespersons affirming peaceful conditions in Nasarawa State and the FCT.

In response to the escalating threats, initiatives such as engaging local hunters and vigilantes in intelligence gathering are being devised. Plans for extensive community engagement and youth involvement aim to fortify security measures and mitigate risks, emphasizing the collaborative effort required to safeguard educational institutions nationwide.
